Herbert Biberman's SALT OF THE EARTH (1954) is one of the first fully independent films produced in the United States. This was out of necessity as the filmmakers were completely blacklisted from Hollywood during the Second Red Scare (the director was one of the infamous Hollywood Ten who refused to answer questions from the House Un-American Activities Committee).

Inspired by and based on a true story, the film follows a group of workers and their families in New Mexico as they strike against a Zinc mining company for better working and living conditions — and transform their union and community in the process. Undermined and suppressed at every stage of production and distribution for its radical content, the film is a testament to the power of solidarity of everyday people across various lines of division.

The strangeness of what has become suburban Florida can only be accurately portrayed as this sun-baked, twice fried coming-of-age independent animation comedy. Boys Go to Jupiter distilled down to its core is a cute yet weird tale of despair and wonder steeped in the language of the modern era.

We chose to screen this to evoke the incoming summer heat, but also to embrace an art form that forces itself to evolve much like the alien critters who transform Billy 500 and those around him.
